Stained glass windows can bring beauty and luster into a home, however over time the luster and beauty can be lost and become dull, through dirt, grim, and gunk build up, so care has to be taken in order to restore the stained glass to it's original sparkle.
The First thing to know about your glass window is, if it is copper foil or traditional leaded, because if it is copper foil the cleaning technique is different. in this article were going to cover cleaning traditional leaded stained glass windows.
For your window you should first wash the window with warm water, you don't want to soak the window, just get it wet. if you soak the glass you may end up developing crystals on the lead, and those crystals are actually dangerous to your health.
If your window is not cleaning very well with just warm water, then a non-ionic detergent may be used, and this allows the glass be washed. A small amount is best to start off with, however if the build up is still not lifting off, then a little more detergent may be used.
If the grim is still to hard to remove with soap and water then alcohol may be necessary. adding a little isopropyl alcohol to water is a good alternative, but for really stubborn dirt using straight isopropyl alcohol may be used if applied to the cloth and then rubbed onto the stained glass window.
Following these steps can assist you in bringing your stained glass back to it's original luster and sparkle.
